Wolf Hood Running but Smoke Still Fills the Kitchen

When a Wolf hood runs and smoke still fills the kitchen, the cause is often geometry: the plume from the front elements drifts out of reach before the canopy can collect it. Test with tissue at every speed and position, wash the baffles, then measure the overhang.

The tissue test, and what it settles

“It feels weak” is not something anyone can act on, so turn it into an observation you can repeat. Tear a strip of tissue a few inches long, hold it up under the canopy and let it hang from your fingers. A working setting will pull it up flat against the filter and hold it. Then move along the canopy — left, middle, right, back edge, front edge — and note exactly where it holds and where it flutters or falls.

Run it at every setting, not just the highest. A hood that grips the tissue only on its top speed has already lost most of its useful range, and that is a different complaint from one that pulls poorly everywhere. Write the results down as a small grid of positions against speeds; it takes two minutes and it is the most valuable thing you will hand a technician.

Then change one variable. Do the whole test with the kitchen closed up as usual, then open a window in the room and do it again. If the difference is dramatic, the hood is capable and the house is the constraint, and you should skip ahead to the section on replacement air. If the two runs look the same and both are poor, the restriction is in the filters or in the run beyond them.

Newton kitchens produce a specific version of this. Baffles and grease: the boring answer, checked first

Clean the filters before you theorise, because a loaded set defeats every other observation you might make. Baffle filters are stainless vanes designed to force the air through tight reversals so grease drops out and drains; they are meant to be washed and reused, unlike the disposable mesh pads found in lighter hoods, which trap by matting and eventually just block.

The washing has to reach inside the vanes, not merely wipe the face. Hot water, a proper degreaser and a soak long enough to soften what has set between the plates, then rinse and dry fully before refitting. Half-cleaned baffles look presentable from the kitchen floor and still choke the intake, which is precisely how a hood ends up with a reputation for being underpowered when it never was.

Grease does not stop at the filter, either. What gets past accumulates on the blower wheel and the inside of the housing, layer by layer over years, and because it lands unevenly the wheel gradually goes out of balance. The first sign is usually acoustic — a new hum, a rumble that was not there last winter — and the airflow loss follows later. That cleaning is a panels-off job on most models rather than a lift-and-soak.

Deciding whether cleaning was the answer is simple: repeat the tissue grid with the filters clean and dry. Improvement across the board means you found it. An identical grid means the filters were never the problem and you can stop scrubbing and read on.

Capture area: what the hood can and cannot reach

A hood does not vacuum a room. It captures a rising plume, and it can only capture what rises inside the area it physically covers. That is why the complaint so often turns out to be geometry rather than a fault: the hood is doing what it can, and the cooking is happening partly outside the zone it can reach.

Overhang is the specific measurement. A canopy that matches the cooking surface exactly, or is narrower than it, gives the plume nowhere to be collected as it drifts, and the front elements are the ones that suffer, because the plume from a front position leans out into the room before it has risen far enough to be drawn back. If your tissue test held firmly at the back and failed at the front, you have found this rather than a mechanical defect. Cooking on the rear elements when you are searing something and moving the wide pan back a few inches will visibly change how much escapes.

Mounting height is the trade-off that sits beside it. Higher clearance is comfortable to work under and lets the plume spread before it arrives; lower capture is more effective and eventually gets in the cook’s way or too near the heat. Manufacturers publish a mounting range for each hood and the reason it is a range rather than a number is that it balances those two, so check the figure for your model rather than accepting whatever height an installer chose.

When the canopy is simply too small or too shallow for what has been put under it, say so honestly: the answer belongs to the installation, not to a repair. No new motor extends a hood over ground it does not physically reach, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a part that changes nothing.

The make-up air problem in a tight house

Air pushed out has to be replaced, and a house that has been sealed well will not supply it. The blower is then trying to pull against the building itself, which limits extraction no matter how capable the hood is on paper — and this is the case where every mechanical check comes back clean and the smoke still hangs over the cooking surface.

You can recognise it by how conditional the performance is. Opening an interior door improves things. Cracking a window transforms them. Another vented appliance in the house starts behaving strangely while the hood is running on a high setting. The blower’s note becomes strained rather than free-running. An Auburndale house that has had its envelope tightened, or a newer rebuild anywhere in the city, is a much likelier candidate than a draughty older structure that leaks air everywhere.

Fitting a stronger blower is the natural instinct and it makes matters worse. More capacity against the same closed building means more noise, more depressurisation and very little extra extraction. The real remedy is a deliberate make-up air path sized to the exhaust, and because that is governed by the mechanical code in force here it belongs with a licensed installer who can check the requirement against the rating of your specific hood — not with a repair visit and not with a hole cut on a weekend.

The duct is the part nobody inspects

The run behind the wall is invisible, unaudited and frequently the whole story. What matters is not how many feet of duct there are but the equivalent length, which adds the resistance of every fitting to the resistance of the straight sections — and a single ninety-degree elbow contributes far more than the small amount of space it takes up. Three tight turns to clear a beam can cost more than the entire straight portion of the run.

Diameter is the other trap. Any reduction anywhere in the run limits the airflow of the whole run at that point, so a transition fitted to squeeze the duct through a joist bay quietly caps everything upstream of it. Flexible ducting substituted for the rigid pipe the installation called for does the same thing more subtly, because the corrugated wall is inherently rough and any sag adds to it. West Newton Hill rebuilds often carry long runs up through finished ceilings to a roof cap, and that is exactly the kind of route where a shortcut gets taken out of sight.

The termination is the part you can sometimes check. Wall and roof caps have dampers that stick, screens that clog, and nests built into them in spring. If the outlet is visible from a window or from the ground, have someone run the hood at speed while you watch whether the damper actually opens. If seeing it means a ladder or a roof, leave it. That is not a homeowner job on a February morning or any other.

Where a technician actually helps

Be clear about what you can finish alone: the tissue grid, a thorough filter wash, the sealed-versus-open comparison, a look at a safely visible outlet, and the honest measurement of how far your canopy overhangs the cooking surface. That list resolves a real share of the hoods we are called to, and there is no reason to pay someone to do it for you.

Stop at anything electrical or structural. A motor that hums without spinning, speeds that have collapsed into one, lights that dim as the blower steps up, a smell of hot insulation around the switch, or work that means holding a heavy canopy overhead while its circuit is live — none of that is worth improvising.

What a visit adds is measurement rather than opinion. We read the static pressure the blower is working against, compare the motor’s actual draw at each speed with what it should be, and watch whether the damper truly swings clear once air is moving through it. Those three separate a tired motor from a blocked run from a house that cannot breathe, which is the distinction that no amount of standing in the kitchen will settle. A diagnostic visit is $95.

Should I fit a more powerful blower?

Rarely the right move. If the limit is a restriction — loaded filters, a stepped-down duct, a damper that sticks — more power buys you more noise against the same obstruction. If the limit is a house that cannot supply replacement air, a larger blower makes the pressure problem worse. Establish which constraint you are actually under before spending anything on capacity.

Can grease build-up in a duct be a fire risk?

Grease is combustible, so keeping the filters and the reachable parts of the run clean is ordinary maintenance and worth doing to a schedule rather than when it occurs to you. Washing the baffles thoroughly is most of the job, since whatever the filters hold never reaches the duct at all. If a run has gone years without attention, have it inspected as part of a service visit.

How often should baffle filters be cleaned?

Tie it to how you genuinely cook rather than to a date. A household that sears, fries or uses a wok several times a week loads a set of baffles far faster than one that mostly boils and bakes. A practical test: if they feel tacky rather than merely dull, they are overdue. Start from the guidance for your model, then adjust it to what you keep finding.
